Rain Garden — Starter Checklist

START WITH THE SITE
[ ] Watch where water flows during a normal rain.
[ ] Mark downspouts, paved surfaces, slopes and low points.
[ ] Keep clear of foundations, utilities, septic systems and unsafe slopes.
[ ] Call 811 and consult local requirements before digging.
[ ] Estimate the drainage area and confirm the soil can absorb water.

BUILD THE COALITION
[ ] Talk with the property owner and affected neighbors.
[ ] Invite a conservation landscape or stormwater professional when needed.
[ ] Choose native plants suited to the light, soil and moisture.
[ ] Plan who will water, weed and maintain the garden.

MAKE THE RESULT USEFUL
[ ] Photograph the site before work begins.
[ ] Provide a safe overflow route.
[ ] Mulch, water and monitor after installation.
[ ] Observe the garden during several storms.
[ ] Record what changed and what you would adapt next time.
