A Letter from Patrick

Mariella,

I strive to make you proud and set the same example for you that my father set for me. It’s about public service and the responsibility of leadership. It’s not an easy one, as it requires sacrifice. It requires being willing to step up and speak out against injustice, to ask the tough questions, to learn the issues, to listen first, and feel humility. It also requires vision, vision-based on countless hours of thinking about solutions. You must show empathy, lead by example, and face the fact that it is not always possible for everyone to get their way- a painful proposition. But once the pain subsides, know that there is one that finds peace in upholding respect throughout the process and being transparent about how the decision was made. It means not relying on optimism alone, but also shoring up against the risks identified in pessimism. It means thinking about the future.

Ultimately the best future requires the efforts of many, many, many people, who are catalyzed behind shared goals, a common vision, and the bold leadership that is committed to stirring common will into action. It’s a role that may at times generate more angst than praise, but so long as your values stay true, you’ll be ok.

Your Dad,

Patrick Moran
