One week ago, alongside my wonderful partner and wife, Danielle, and our daughter, Mariella, I announced my candidacy for the Alexandria City Council. Our mission was clear: to see Alexandria become the Greatest Small City in the World to live, work, and raise a family. By any standard, it is a bold and ambitious goal. And while it has evoked a few chuckles here and there, there is no doubt that it has helped catalyze momentum behind the opportunity we face as a community. In less than one week, we collected over 200 signatures for our petition to get on the ballot, far more than the 125 signatures required. Thirteen volunteers came together and committed nearly 90 hours of service. Seventeen donors contributed a total of $3815. This is our fuel. Hours and dollars provide the means to share our message and bring the city together, and it is only beginning. It has also been encouraging to be reminded of the many Alexandrians who share this vision of possibility and who continue to sacrifice their efforts and passion to see a vision of a truly great Alexandria be a reality for ALL Alexandrians.

In this past week, our dear friends, old and new, rallied around our candidacy and launched our campaign. They understand that our service is not based on personal ambition but to lend a helpful voice of action, accountability, and creativity, which our council of six stands to benefit from. I am confident in my ability: -to shift the paradigm of current conversation with an entrepreneurial mindset, perspective, and critique that comes only from building a small business from the ground up, creating jobs, and investing and mentoring young professionals to help them achieve their professional goals;

-to draw on technical knowledge to address the stormwater crisis our city faces while protecting our unique natural ecology in our green spaces. This technical knowledge is based on years of work addressing the same concerns we face as a City, not through large infrastructure projects, but parcel by parcel where every dollar counts to improve permeability and reduce stormwater runoff;

-to address gaps in the resilience and preparedness of our neighborhoods, small businesses, and city government. I intend to continue the work I spearheaded as Chairman of the City Council-appointed Citizen Corps Council (CCC) to work with City staff, Members of Council, Our Mayor, our businesses, small and large, non-profit organizations, faith-based organizations, and citizen volunteers to identify gaps and provide solutions to contend with the challenges we all face;

-to achieve heightened standards of learning and support, leveraging technology and collaboration, while supporting our teachers to ensure that our students receive a world-class education. Our children deserve no less, and nothing is more important.

These goals are attainable. I aim to find creative solutions that can be mobilized in days, weeks, and months – not years and decades. The pieces are there. Many excellent and selfless leaders are already working tirelessly toward these aims. We will push for transparency and accountability to expand our understanding of the issues from all perspectives, as we seek to empathize with and respect all citizens, including those with whom we may at times disagree. That is the power of community: mutual respect, building upon shared values and a shared vision to see our city be the absolute best it possibly can be. We should all consider ourselves truly blessed to know that with the right steps, planning, accountability, and reform, Our Best Stands to be The Best: a truly unique and humbling reality.

Thank you again to all of our supporters and especially those who have been willing to commit time and dollars, and all of you who have stood by our family and my father’s legacy of public service and progressive values. I sincerely thank you for your help. I recognize that you do so often in the face of misinformation that has become all too common in our political process and democratic system. I thank you for standing resolute on the side of truthfulness and the issues that matter. Please vote in our Democratic Party Primary on June 8 or connect with the Alexandria Voter Registrar’s Office to learn about early voting and absentee options. Our future is bright. Let’s enjoy it together.
